Interviews
Sophia: Sophia is an innovation academy student here at UF and when I asked her about IA limiting majors and it affecting her she said that it did not affect her too much because she was content with her major. However, she did say that she knew plenty of people who wanted to change their major outside of IA but either have to wait because of credits or petition. She also said from the people she has talked to that a lot of the advisors from other colleges do not take innovation academy students seriously.
Victoria:Victoria is an innovation academy student as well, and like many other IA students she explains how she loves IA but she believes that it is unfair how IA students are limited to the amount of majors to pick from, and if they want to change their major they have to go through a long tedious process of developing connections and writing an essay. Her main point was that this is not fair because someone who would not have been in IA with a lower GPA could easily go to the same college and get their major changed in one day.
Maddie: Maddie is an innovation academy student and she wants to change her major to dietetics, but because of the innovation academy she has had a lot of problems with advisors and building a petition. She also mentioned that it was really hard to build a petition when you are trying to manage hard classes at the same time. She explained how she wanted to build a strong petition but at the same time balancing work made it hard. She also included the point about how it was not fair how non innovation academy students did not have to make a petition.
Deren: Deren an innovation academy major as well, but wants to change hew major to Food science. Like dietetics this major is not included within innovation academy and so she is trying to generate a petition as well. What stood out to me the most was that she said that if her petition did not get past she would have to transfer.
Arielle: Arielle loves innovation academy but says she does not think it is fair how other students can freely change their majors and other innovation academy students cannot. She believes that this is definitely a problem and that a lot of people leave the university because of it. She says that it was sad that her fellow gators left because of something that could have been an easy fix.
From these interviews I have learned that many people leave the university because of this problem and a lot of people have a hard time finalizing petitions because of the difficulty of classes.
